Photos of Phillips County, AR, which is ranked by the New York Times among the hundred hardest places to live in America.
Helena-West Helena Arkansas was once a blues mecca, made famous by King Biscuit Time, a radio show hosted by Sonny Boy Williamson II and Robert Lockwood Jr. It is the longest running daily American radio broadcast in history. King Biscuit Time drives and pushes the heart of Phillips County. The vast majority of occupied businesses are in some way related to blues, or to embracing Delta soul life. The music that has come from Helena for the past seventy years speaks to a vibrant and critical piece of American history. I like to imagine that the same vibrancy brought by Sonny Boy Williamson II can help to revive Helena to the bustling harbor town it once was.
