Photos of Northampton County, NC, which is ranked by the New York Times among the hundred hardest places to live in America.
Northampton County was never particularly developed. Its population peaked after World War II at around 28,000 people. In The Andy Griffith Show, and a host of other American TV shows and films, we are shown images of idyllic, safe, comfortable little towns like Mayberry. Towns that thrive in their insularity, despite a lack of apparent industry or commerce.
It is interesting to take this vision into consideration when looking at a place like Northampton County, where just over a fifth of the population lives below the poverty line. Is Mayberry possible?
