Photos of Greene County, AL, which is ranked by the New York Times among the fifty hardest places to live in America.
As I drove through the outskirts of Greene County, on my way into Eutaw, almost every single person I saw waved– even some who were resting on porches that were well set back from the road. The implied friendliness was so overwhelming– and so consistent!– that I wondered for a minute if they had mistaken my car for that of a local celebrity, or at least someone well-known and well-loved.
Eutaw, the county seat, is in full Christmas regalia, despite the warm, dry December. Maybe it’s just my yearning for snow, but the Christmas decorations felt forlorn in the green, green grass– like they were holding out hope for a season that isn’t coming.
